ORIGINS OF DREAM MESSAGES
WHERE DO DREAM MESSAGES COME FROM?The mechanics of dreaming begins with the unconscious, which is your memory bank. Daily experiences are sifted by the part of your mind that never sleeps - the psyche. The psyche catalogues every day's new input and flags issues that need your attention, like feelings that are getting out of control, unanswered questions or problems. At the end of its review process, the psyche then sends a memo to the waking mind, using a dream to transport the message. Here’s how it works.
The Scientific Debate Behind What Causes Dreams. Scientists debate everything including why we dream, whether dreams have meaning, what causes dreams, and theories about dreaming and the two main schools of thought are called “hardware” versus “software” theories. Those on the "hardware” side think the brain is “hardwired” and that are merely spontaneous firings of brain cells that excite random memories, and to the hardwired camp, dreams are meaningless. Others see dreams as built-in “software” of the brain; researchers such as Milton Kramer, M.D., Montague Ullman, M.D. and Ernest Hartmann, M.D. have done extensive studies that show dreams are structured, not random, and are linked meaningfully to waking events in your daily life. They see the unconscious and dreams as part of the “built-in software” of the brain to process emotions and problems, and generate insights and needed resolution as we sleep. We at InterpretAdream.com agree with the dreams-as-brain software theorists and conclude from direct experience that dreams have a practical, direct meaning.
Stored Memories Are a Link to Dreaming. All experience and knowledge is stored in the unconscious, the part of the brain that acts like a video camera. The unconscious part of the brain records and catalogue events, feelings and thoughts as your memory storage locker. Your dreams choose memories of experiences and objects to play a game of Charades, so that past items become a message for a current situation.
The Psyche Oversees the Big Picture. The psyche is the sum of your psychological and emotional parts, the part of the brain that sees the big picture. The psyche never sleeps and is that part of the brain that at night, processes feelings, thoughts and problems on your mind during the day. Before filing them into memory, the psyche compares daily input to memories in storage and also compares new input to goals and standards, what you want in life. Unresolved issues and questions are flagged; what is resolved gets stored.
The Psyche Sends out a Memo, which is the Dream. After sifting through the day’s experiences, the psyche then sends out a “what if” memo that contains insights and suggestions, as in: “What if you take courses to improve your skills so that you can get the promotion you want?” which you may remember as a dream story about being back in high school or college. As the bridge between the sleeping and waking mind, dreams are the transportation system to transmit messages from the psyche.
There are Many Types of Dream Messages. Like a best friend, your psyche sends a variety of dream messages to balance emotions, provide insights into problems and put relationships into perspective. Because the psyche sees the big picture and wants what’s best for you, it uses dream messages to conduct an on-going dialogue.
