POINTING OUT A FLAW. Some scary dreams act like a mirror. They point out a flaw that can trip you up or show a situation that can get out of hand. Such dreams mirror traits like a bad temper, laziness, or poor communication that can get you in trouble. Watching a shortcoming in yourself in a dream can feel like an "Oops" and the ego responds, "Who, me?" Because it is painful to confront anything negative about yourself, the dream scares you.
A HEADS UP. Nightmares can also provide a heads up about a challenge that is building up such as a health condition, or a clash with a coworker or a loved one that, if left unchecked, could get out of hand.
FLAGGING AN ISSUE. A nightmare is a friendly message to help you deal with whatever is going on. It highlights an issue at an early stage so that you can keep a negative trait or event from becoming worse. Though scary, such nightmares help you avoid unwanted consequences like a partner who walks out on you because of a bad temper, or getting fired for being uncooperative at work.
A NIGHTMARE AS A TRUE WARNING.Though most dreams mix literal and symbolic scenes, there are rare nightmares that are a literal warning. Such dreams may several characteristics like intense emotions, real places and people portrayed as they actually are, and the dreams often recurr. Literal warnings tend to show an exact scene of what to watch for and avoid, like an accident, or an acquaintance who is spoiling for a fight. Warning dreams about health issues often show a body part and even name the problem that is building up. Some dreams include a hint for how to help or deal with the topic for which the warning is issued.
