Reaching a Dead End Recurring Dream
Swimming to Ship and Getting Trapped in a Dead End
The dream begins with me walking arm in arm with my significant other along a boardwalk near a beach. We are talking and laughing. Eventually we come to an odd spot on the boardwalk, where dozens of diving boards are built into the railing, going over the top of the ocean. Without hesitation, my companion hurries to a board and dives into the water. I realize hundreds of other people are lined up, waiting their turn to dive off one of these boards into the water. I feel compelled to take my place in line as well, and I dive into the ocean.
After I dive in, I notice that none of us have any trouble breathing underwater, and in fact, it almost feels natural. As I swim, I search for my companion and eventually catch up. We swim for what seems like hours, and we all swim in the same direction.
Finally, in the distance, I see the hull of a large cruise ship resting on the bottom of the ocean and everyone swims fast toward it. My companion smiles at me then darts off with renewed enthusiasm, and I am again left behind. I remember thinking, "What the hell is going on?" but was not frightened or concerned.
As we get closer, I see hundreds of openings along the side of the ship, big enough for a person to swim though. I see my companion and others go through an opening and hurry to catch up. However, after my companion swims through the opening, a door shuts and stops me from following. Apparently, I'm supposed to find my own little doorway to swim through.
I find an opening next to the one my companion swam through, and I go through. Inside is the beginning of a glass tunnel; I can see my companion through the walls but they don't notice me though I wave and make as much noise as I can. A few seconds later the door closes behind me; I am stuck in the mouth of this glass tube. I watch as the water drains from my companion's tube, and others simply slide out of the tube to wherever it leads. However, the water never drains from my tube; it doesn't seem to go anywhere and there is another pane of glass blocking the path, and the door behind me blocks my exit. I am in an aquatic coffin.
Suddenly I can no longer breathe in the water and am left here to drown while everyone else that swam to this ship found safety inside. This is usually where I wake up, terrified and gasping for air.
Frightened, confused, uncertain.
Main Life Issues:
Finances, education, family.
Someone tries to do what others do but instead of achieving the same success and goals as others, reach a dead end.
Ship: Ship of Life
Swim and follow others to Ship: Going with the flow; act as expected.
Death: Generally a symbol of change, great change.
What it Means:
The dream suggests you’ve tried to do everything right in life, as in, everything that was expected as you followed trends set by society. However, you have reached an impasse in life where you feel stifled and are not achieving happiness or goals you thought you would achieve. Dying at the end suggests you have come to a place in your life when you have to reassess and make changes.
Bottom Line: The dream suggests a need to review goals, dreams, vision of your life, and what and why you do what you do. Instead of following others, redefine what is meaningful to create a new inner compass based on what is real and true for you.
That actually makes sense. Thank you.
