People in Dreams

What People Represent in Dreams

Whether family members, friends, strangers, or famous personalities, people in dreams are an important part of the message. The three ways dream characters present information are:

1. IT'S ABOUT YOU. They almost always mirror something in you.

2. RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS. How people act in a dream can be feedback about interactions in a current relationship.
3. FACTUAL INFORMATION .
On rare occasions, a dream gives true facts about someone else so that you can understand them or help them.

PEOPLE REPRESENT YOU

Most people in a dream act like a mirror. They tell you something about yourself. A character doing something constructive may be pointing out your own positive traits to encourage you to develop more of them, or to become mroe aware of that character trait in yourself. If the dream person mirrors a negative trait, it can be an invitation to balance it or get rid of it.

Assessing the Dream Person
When you see a person in a dream, decide how their actions, attitudes, or feelings resonate with yours. For example, suppose you have a dream about a sad lady on a bus. Normally you feel upbeat but lately have been feeling blue. The dream may mirror your momentary sadness so that you can deal with it. You have to notice and name your feelings before they can be changed. That is what a dream comes to do - pinpoint and name the feeling.

Blind Spots

What if a dream points out a negative trait like being vain, bad tempered or nasty? This may not welcome news if ti is your dream, but once you realize how important it is to get in touch with blind spots, it becomes good news. Noting blind spots is beneficial for many reasons. Blind spots often relate to strong emotions and troubling past experiences. They can be related to a trait in you that shows potential but needs a constructive direction.

If not recognized, blind spots can act as "run-away energies". They can lead to impulsive behavior, poor decisions and unexpected reactions that you later regret. If others get to see your blind spots which happens on occasion,  it can be embarrassing and affect reputation, self esteem and career. All that may happen because of a blind spot. Dreams help by putting a spotlight on them in a dream, which helps you avoid becoming your own worst enemy.

A Stitch in Time Saves Nine
Blind spots are normal. Like baby teeth, you outgrow them if you striving to become the best you can be. Dreams are a personal monitoring system to flag these small problem areas in time to fix them. Accept the news of a blind spot as a gift and pluck out the weed before anyone notices. Doing so keeps you on a successful and happy life track.

Mirror of Self - The First Option
Explore traits of people in your dreams as a mirror of yourself. If your psyche mirrors a trait and you get the message, it releases you from what is holding you back and empowers you to grow into your best potentials.

People in Dreams Show Relationship Dynamics
People in dreams can play out the dynamics going on between people in your life. They can reveal hidden attitudes and motives, yours or others. Relationships can be complex. A person's motives or actions can be hard to decipher. Being directly involved or having a stake in the relationship can cloud perceptions. Dreams can point out what is really going on. They can help move a relationship forward by revealing where someone is coming from, including you!

A Dream can Create an Instant Change in a Relationship
Sometimes, instead of presenting a message, the dream creates an intense experience that immediately changes the dynamics of a relationship. For example, a woman who resented working with her brilliant but very difficult boss dreamed of him as a little boy. In the dream, he was frantic and wild, needing help. She helps and sooths him, as she did her own son years before. The boy transforms from a wild man to a calm and peaceful friend, which makes her feel good. As she woke up, she no longer felt animosity toward her boss. Now she could see past the grumpy old man to the troubled boy who needed her assistance. Drawing on the mother in herself, she became glad to help him. The changed attitude opened up a new sense of peace and satisfaction in a challenging work environment.

Actual Facts about Other People in Dreams

Dreams can provide actual information about others, especially if that person is important to you. As we go to sleep, we think: “What about X?”, so dreams about then are natural. Dream messages respond to what is on your mind. If you are concerned about a spouse, child, friend or loved one, you can receive information about them in a dream. It may reveal hints about their career progress or a child's talents. Look for dreams that may give you insight about loved ones and your relationship with them.

Eliminate Alternatives

I once saw a childhood friend in a dream with whom I had not spoken in several years. In the dream she was sad and desperate. The dream did not match anything in my life so I wondered if it could be some true facts about the friend. I got in touch with her and discovered she really was going through a bad time. As an old friend, she could talk to me and that helped her regain her footing.

So if you keep dreaming of your child sitting in front of a piano or holding a tuba, it might be a hint! Encourage them to take music lessons or join the school band.

How do you know if a dream is about another person?

First explore whether the dream is a message for you. If nothing resonates in your life, consider that it might be about someone around you, though most dreams are about you. Keeping in mind to check "personality traits" rather than just appearance as a clue to who it may be about, discreetly check if dream info might apply to another. If the information might help them, share it tactfully and take a wait-and-see attitude.

A QUICK METHOD TO ASSESS
THE MEANING OF A PERSON IN YOUR DREAM

The 2 + 2 EXCERCISE
What a Person in a Dream Represents

Whether someone you know or a stranger, try this to see what the person in your dream represents.

Without thinking, pick out two qualities and two negatives about the person you see in the dream. Even if it is a stranger, we have opinions, so go ahead. This is not about being judgmental. It is simply about describing traits that the dream character reminds you of.

Now stand back and take an honest look at yourself. See whether you recognize any of the pluses or minuses in yourself that you just selected. In psychology this is called a "projection exercise". It works because it's always easier to see a trait in someone else than in ourselves. Your dream psyche knows this, so it uses the other person to mirror your traits. Your mind is a trickster, but one that is playing tricks so that you can benefit.

Do this exercise when a dream has a central character or two that seem very important for the dream story. Do the exercise even if you think you already know what the person represents. The result can be surprising and at times, funny.
From the part of yourself that is quiet and honest, take a look at those traits, both positive and negative, and see if they apply to you. Sometimes the feature applies only for a particular situation or temporary time period.

Care for a Little, Less, or More?

If you recognize a positive trait from a dream character, does it suggest that you could use more of it? Is it a characteristic you once had but are no longer use? Is it something you lack and need to develop? Or is it a pat on the back to communicate how well you are using the trait. If you recognize a negative trait, don't take it as a blow to your ego. Nobody is perfect. Your psyche is the right arm of your soul, like a best friend who knows you and cares a lot about you. If brings a negative to your attention to help solve a problem or resolve an issue.

For example, you may dream of a person sitting on the sidelines at a party because they are shy. You don't think of yourself as shy, but then realize that you do sit on the sidelines at work. It dawns on you that you lately wondered why you are not progressing at work. The dream may suggest that you have to interact more with people to bring your talents to the attention of those who can help your career.

It's All Good
Dreams only bring information that can help so there are no negatives. There are only parts of self that need loving attention to bring out the best. If you greet all dreams as bearers of a positive message, you are on your way to great success, happiness, and inner contentment.
