Free and Professional Dream Analysis and What Dreams Mean
Why Dream Dictionaries and Symbol Books Don't Work
There are reasons that a DREAM DICTIONARY or BOOK ON SYMBOLS cannot give you an accurate meaning about your dream.
DREAM DICTIONARIES DON'T WORK. The meaning of a symbol relates to your unique experience as a unique message for you. The only way to get to the true meaning of a dream is to follow the Five Step Technique and match the story to your life; when you do that, dream symbols add to a dream's meaning as in examples below. There are exceptions like common symbols that can mean the same across cultures, such as a smile as a sign of friendship or an altar as a symbol of reverence. Yet most meanings listed in dream dictionaries do not apply to your particular dream.
HERE IS WHAT WORKS - MATCHING A SYMBOL TO YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Suppose you were attacked by a dog; to you, a dream of a dog relates to fear and danger. However, if you have a dog as a loved pet, a dream about a dog means loyalty, friendship and love. The image of a dog in the dream is the same but the experience is different, leading to a different meaning for each dreamer. That is true for every symbol you encounter in a dream. The meaning varies according to your life experience which dream books cannot list. Whether you like it or not, one size cannot fit all. To get a true meaning of your dream, use the Five Step Technique.
HOWEVER, IF YOUDO USE A DREAMDICTIONARY, use it as a reference point for your own thinking and associations, not as an answer to what your symbol means. So, if you're looking up "dog" as a dream symbol and the dream dictionary says that it means "friend" or "something needs guarding", ask yourself if dogs symbolize friendship for you, and whether there is something going on in your life that needs to be more guarded or secure. Better still, go back to your own experience and ask yourself when was the last time you interacted with a dog, and what was going on in your life then, and what was going through your mind and feelings. Don't let the book on symbols take you away from your own experience, which would set you on the path of an incorrect meaning.
