Dreams About Running, Chasing, and Being Chased

CHASED & ATTACKED: I always dream that someone chases me and violently attacks me. It feels so real.FELT HOW: Terrified.STORY LINE: Someone feels under attack.SYMBOLS:Being Chased: Feeling vulnerable.Feels so real: Intense emotions; indicates that the dream touches on a subject in the dreamer's life that is a very sensitive subject or past experience. Repeated nightmares of being chased. Suggests a past event that was traumatic, whose memories are so painful that the dreamer is trying to push the memories away. WHAT IT MEANS:The dream suggests that some area of your life or a past memory makes you feel very vulnerable. It could be a relationship, work situation, or, most likely, a past experience that was traumatic, Only you can decide what makes you feel vulnerable and what experience in your past has painful leftover emotions. By pinpointing that experience and dealing with it, you can begin to recover and find your strength. BOTTOM LINE: A recurring nightmare suggests a past traumatic event that is now triggering memories and vulnerable feelings. Sometimes such a past experience is temporarily forgotten, but when the memories surface, it needs to be dealt with. Otherwise, it can trip you up in life. If that is the case, it may be wise to seek the help of a counselor to unravel the pain and bring you back to strength.
CHASED: BOTH HAVE SAME DREAM:I've had this dream since I was five years old and still have the exact dream; my sister also had the same dream since she was a child. When I dream it, it's me. When she has the dream, it is her but everything else is the same. This is the dream. I'm in a house surrounded by water. I did not run into this house, I’m just there, terrified and trying to escape because I am being chased. There is no way out and a bearded man bursts up through the floor, then I wake up. It is the same dream for my sister.FELT HOW: Scared, terrified.MAIN LIFE ISSUES: Normal every day issues.STORY LINE: It’s a story about a continuous threat and a dangerous intruder. SYMBOLS:Being Chased: Feeling very vulnerable. Bursting up Through Floor: One’s foundation does not feel safe.WHAT IT MEANS:Dreams relate to what is going on around us. If you both started having this dream in childhood, the question is: What happened around age five that first scared you and made you feel so vulnerable and terrified? You may or may not remember the event. There can be a tendency to forget (suppress) painful memories, but with that much terror, something triggered the dreams. The story is about a villain who pursues then suddenly appears and threatens. From a five year old’s perspective, which could relate to an incidents like someone who was drunk, sexual molestation or some other severe, on-going threat.Whatever the event that began the original feelings, if you are still getting the dream, the dream may have become a cue so that when you now feel vulnerable, the dream appears. Current threats may not be as scary and you may not feel as vulnerable as you did as a five year old, but the dream is now a signal that says: “Danger, watch out.” The same is true for your sister. The fact that you had the very same dream as children, which is very rare, indicates that something happened during childhood that affected you both, deeply.BOTTOM LINE: It is unusual to have the same dream as children and more unusual to recur through adulthood. It may indicate that healing is needed, related to an original family trauma. CHASED BY MURDERER:I was in a hospital-type room that was upstairs in a house because we were hiding from a man who was trying to murder all of us. The man in the bed was about to have surgery the next day. His wife was in the room, trying to calm him down but not succeeding. The man had blood over him. I am a nurse in real life. In the dream, I told the wife that I would talk to him to calm him and lessen his anxiety, which I did. Then the doorbell rang and I went downstairs. Another person in the house said she wanted me to meet someone, so I followed her into another room. A man was sitting in the chair and she said, "This is Robert" and I instantly knew that was the name of the man trying to murder us. I was enveloped with fear! MAIN LIFE ISSUES: Lost my job a few months ago and employer lied, so unemployment was denied.FELT HOW: Frightened. I woke up, shaken, unable to go back to sleep.STORY LINE:This dream has three story lines. 1) Someone faces drastic change (is about to have surgery);2) Someone needs reassurance and receives it (nurse talks to surgery patient)3) Someone is filled with dread when they come face to face with an agent of drastic change.SYMBOLS:Death: Generally a symbol of change, drastic change.Hospital room: Where people recover or wait for help.Hiding: Feeling vulnerable, trying to avoid what is frightening or painful. Blood all over the patient: A metaphor for the pain dreamer experienced. Nurse reassures patient: Giving solace and encouragement. In this dream, it is a metaphor of the encouragement dreamer gets from inner self, which tells them that whatever they go through will be okay. Coming face to face with murderer: Confronting the source of one's problems, facing one's pain. In this dream, it is a metaphor for accepting where one is at, so that one can move forward. WHAT IT MEANS:You have had unexpected, drastic changes that feel painful and terrible, leaving you feeling scared and insecure. When you calm the patient in the dream, you are telling yourself to find your calm place, and are receiving words of consolation from your own soul. The fact that the murderer is still at large tells you that is important to face the pain and accept the next steps. Death is a symbol of change, and murder is a metaphor of drastic change, and that is what you are going through. BOTTOM LINE: There are no frightening dreams, only frightened dreamers. The dream is saying you need to calm down, fact the pain and accept where you are at. That will allow you to take steps to reclaim your life and your inner strength. Take heart. Such unexpected and painful changes can unseat your stable inner place, but the best may yet be ahead of you. SCARY MAN CHASES: A scary man is chasing me, my daughters and my friends. The chase starts from the home town I came from in the mid-West and continues to where I live now in a nearby State. I don’t know why the man chases us.FELT HOW: Scary.MAIN LIFE ISSUES: Stability. STORY LINE: Someone and their loves ones run from something that threatens.SYMBOLS:Scary Man: Symbol of fears; what makes you feel vulnerable.Being chased: A threat, feeling vulnerable.Starts from home town I come from. A threat or fear that began long ago; a fear that originates in one’s past.Chase that goes on and on: A long term vulnerability; a fear related to something that happened long ago and has not been dealt with. Location where I live now: One’s present state; present circumstance. Also chases family and loved ones: A threat or vulnerability one fears will affect those around them.WHAT IT MEANS:Being chased in a dream shows vulnerability about a specific situation or in general. The dream describes someone feeling danger for self and for those around them. With stability as a main issue, the dream says that whatever has been making you feel uneasy or vulnerable has its roots in something from the past or in your childhood.BOTTOM LINE: The dream tells you that if you want to feel secure, you’ll have to examine past traumas that still affect you. Pain from one's childhood or attitudes acquired when you are young can affect you for life, and if they carry a negative effect, like making you always feel anxious, it is something you need to handle. Since it is impossible to process childhood experiences on one’s own, it may be wise to find a therapist who can help.
